I worked at Codemasters for about a year and a half. Before that I was doing a PhD at the University of Birmingham, researching under Richard Kaye. The subject of my thesis involved a particular area of mathematics called model theory. I studied a mathematical structure known as Presburger arithmetic (or Z-Groups as they are also called), which is effectively the 'addition' part of arithmetic. Although all of the models which I looked at contain the integers, they will also often have extra 'infinite' elements larger than any of the integers but which behave in similar ways. I looked especially at automorphisms of the models, which constitute mappings which go from a model to itself; in other words they rearrange the elements of the model whilst still preserving its essential properties.

Apart from mathematics there are a number of other activities which I enjoy, including programming and art. For a lot of the programs I like to combine the two interests, so many of the things you'll find there are connected in some way to computer graphics.

I also like to spend time delving into various areas of philosophy, although I prefer to concentrate less on the historical aspects and more on the ideas involved. As yet there isn't really anything on this site related to the topic, but there might be one day.

Finally, but certainly not least, the love of my life is my beautiful wife Joanna. We got married three years ago and you can see how lovely she is in the photo on the left.

Joanna and I both lived in Birmingham for quite some time, and Joanna remained working there for about half a year after I moved up here to Liverpool. Thankfully she's now moved up to Liverpool as well and I'm happy to say we've now moved into the same flat together again!

After living in Birmingham for so long it's interesting to be experiencing Liverpool now. I don't feel I've discovered very much of it yet, but I'm sure this will change.
